In the second round of moveDC public workshops—Ideas on Choices—we will be discussing and collecting feedback on three approaches that have the potential to help us reach our transportation goals and are presenting information on existing transportation conditions and citywide trends. We also are holding two Ideas on Choices webinars on June 12th and June 13th.

Commuter rail and bus services operate between outlying population centers and downtown. They carry large numbers of commuters to the District each work day.

More people, more jobs. In the District alone, our population increases by approximately 1,100 people per month.


 
 

Approaches

What will it take for us to have a world-class transportation system that provides exceptional travel choices for people who live, work, and visit the District?  People's differing perspectives led us to develop three approaches to consider. Each approach offers diverse ways to get around the District and for the city to connect with the surrounding region. These approaches are not the transportation plan; rather, they are a means of testing ideas generated by participants. Each approach addresses a particular idea. After we adjust approaches based on what we learn from you, the approaches will be analyzed and evaluated. Eventually, we'll select a set of favorable elements to create a balanced, coordinated, and integrated transportation plan. For now, we're looking to keep the approaches distinct and bold.

Why these approaches?  The three approaches were based on input for moveDC committees and the public. They explore the tension between commuter trips and local, short-distance trips and how and where each trip type should be accommodated. Individual elements in each approach were informed by your input, including the "How's It Moving" exercise.

  Approach 1:
Stay the Course

The system has something for everyone. Let's keep it that way. Focus on incremental improvements for all the ways we travel and prioritize infrastructure state of good repair. This approach assumes current levels of funding (with increases for inflation) without new user fees.
 
 
Approach 2:
Get to the Center

Let's really fix the congestion downtown, and the whole city will be better off. Focus on efficiently accessing downtown from within the District, within the region, and outside the region using all modes of transportation.
 
 
Approach 3:
Connect the Neighborhoods

Focus on short-distance travel and the District will be more livable. Focus on increasing connectivity, access, and efficiency of travel between neighborhood and key destinations citywide. Prioritize local travel and protect local streets in residential neighborhoods from regional traffic intrusion.
